THE TOWN BARBER

During the first term of my bachelor’s degree, I created a body of work inspired by The Town Barber, a specific barbershop on the Moor in Falmouth, Cornwall. I wanted to document this particular establishment and capture its charm and character. I’m always on the hunt for personality and narrative, we need more humour in life. Sometimes, work doesn’t need to be serious.

The process of documentation was interesting. “You know the drill” - I had to obtain customers’ consent before taking any photographs. However, sketching from life was acceptable. Why? Perhaps it’s due to the unknowns of the internet and how rapidly the digital landscape now evolves; no one quite knows where material will end up.

A haircut can be quite a personal experience, where customers become vulnerable. They don’t just go in for a tidy-up or to try something new with their look - people talk. They really open up when they’re in the chair.
